The castle is a remarkably well preserved 15th century stronghold located on the south shore of the River Clyde estuary. Built in 1478 by Sir George Maxwell, the initial layout featured a tall late medieval Scottish tower house and a secure gatehouse. In 1597 Sir Patrick Maxwell expanded the site into a three storey Renaissance style mansion, adding elegant features like crow stepped gables and corbelled turrets. The castle's most notorious resident was Sir Patrick Maxwell, who was famously brutal to his wife, Lady Margaret Crawford, imprisoning her inside the castle for decades. During the 18th century, the castle was rented to non resident commercial tenants. One occupant, John Orr, bought bears and big cats from arriving sailors and kept them in the castle's vaulted cellars.
