The name Holborn comes from the Old Norse Hóllborg, meaning " hill fort ". There are remains of a promontory fort at the tip of the headland, dating to the Bronze or Iron Age. The lighthouse of 1862, was designed and built by the famous Stevenson brothers, David and Thomas Stevenson, the father and uncle of author Robert Louis Stevenson.
