It is a stunning, fjord like sea loch located in the remote and rugged northwest Scottish Highlands, known for its breathtaking natural beauty and significant geological features, it attracts hikers, geologists, and nature lovers. Situated in the Assynt district of Sutherland, the loch widens from Loch Beag and eventually flows into Eddrachillis Bay near the village of Kylesku. The geology visible at Loch Glencoul documents the formation of the Caledonian mountains, which occurred when two ancient continents, Laurentia, including Scotland and North America, and Avalonia, including England and Wales, collided. This collision forced massive slabs of rock to be pushed westwards over younger layers. Despite its remote location, the glen had a small community.
