It is the oldest village on Royal Deeside in Aberdeenshire, located between the towns of Banchory and Aboyne. The name Kincardine comes from the Gaelic for " head of the copse ". The village is also known locally as " Kinker ". The 14th century Old Parish Church of St Mary, was in use until 1862. It was originally built with an adjacent hospital for the poor and travelers. One of Scotland’s greatest thinkers was born in Kincardine O’Neil. Thomas Reid, born 1710, died 1796, was a major figure of the Scottish Enlightenment and for his common sense philosophy in particular. Reid’s major works are – An inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense ; Essays on Intellectual Powers of Man; Essays on the Active Powers of Man.
