Andy Clyde was a prolific Scottish born film and television actor who was born in Blairgowrie in 1892. He had a career spanning over four decades and is best known for his roles as Hopalong Cassidy's sidekick, California Carlson, and for his work on the TV series The Real McCoys and Lassie. He began his career in vaudeville in Scotland and first toured the United States in 1912. He permanently moved to America in the 1920s at the invitation of his friend, actor James Finlayson. He began in silent film comedies with producer Mack Sennett in 1921. He became known for his masterful use of makeup, allowing him to play a wide variety of characters. Clyde's most enduring character was a grizzled, mustachioed old man, which he developed early in his career and continued to refine for decades. From the late 1930s into the 1940s, he gained widespread recognition playing the comedic sidekick California Carlson in nearly 40 Hopalong Cassidy films. He moved to television in the 1950s and 60s, with notable recurring roles as: Cully Wilson: An eccentric farmer on the TV series Lassie; George MacMichael: A grumpy neighbor on The Real McCoys.. Clyde continued to work until his death in Los Angeles in 1967 at the age of 75. He was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
