The lighthouse was designed by David and Thomas Stevenson and was first lit on November 10, 1857. It was automated in 1960 and is maintained by the Northern Lighthouse Board. The light marks the entrance to the Sound of Mull and helps open the bay and anchorage at Tobermory.
