Scotland's first lighthouse was a coal fired beacon built on the island in 1636. The current, lighthouse was completed in 1816 and became automated in 1989. Monastic settlements were founded on the island as early as the 6th and 7th centuries. On a foggy night in January 1918, a series of naval accidents occurred near the island, resulting in the loss of two submarines and 105 lives. Boat trips to the Isle of May operate from Anstruther and North Berwick. The island is open to visitors from April to the end of September. A typical boat trip from Anstruther lasts 4.5 to 5 hours and includes 2.5 to 3 hours ashore. Trips are dependent on the weather and tides, so booking in advance is recommended, especially for peak season visits to see puffins Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
