Eventually the road reaches the suburbs of St Andrews. It runs along Buchanan Gardens and reaches a mini roundabout in the centre of town where we then reach the West Port. Packed with history, tradition and scenic views, St Andrews is a real Scottish gem. This small city is set on the coast of Fife to the north east of Edinburgh. It's only an hour away from Edinburgh so you could easily take a day trip, but it's worth taking your time. The West Port of St Andrews was built in 1587 as a monumental entrance to the city’s South Street. It was less a defensive structure than it was a symbol of civic pride. Its design is based on that of the Netherbow in Edinburgh, which, in turn, was modelled on Paris’s Porte Saint-Honore. The gate was extensively refurbished in 1843.
