The name is from the Norse for " water island, " hints at its watery surroundings. Vatersay, Scottish Gaelic: Bhatarsaigh, is the southernmost and westernmost inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides. At the end of the nineteenth century, the existing landowner, wanting to use the whole of the island for their own farming purposes, evicted all the existing crofter inhabitants. Following the Highland Clearances, a group of crofters from Barra and Mingulay landed on Vatersay, claiming the right to settle on the land. This action led to a court case in Edinburgh, where the Vatersay Raiders won, and the government was compelled to purchase the island. A three-masted ship carrying emigrants to Canada was wrecked in Vatersay Bay during a storm, resulting in the loss of over 300 lives. The island boasts beautiful beaches and scenic paths.
