The Forewall Battery was designed to house and protect artillery, specifically cannons, to defend the castle against attacks from the North East. It was built as part of a larger program to modernize and strengthen the castle's defenses in the 1720s and 1730s, under the direction of General Wade. It is located on the north side of the castle, adjacent to the Half Moon Battery, and faces towards the city and the River Forth.
