It is reputed that a church has stood on this site since the 8th century, when St Fergus established a small ecclesiastical structure. Records show that a church has existed here since at least 1242, when David de Bernham, Bishop of St Andrews Cathedral in Fife, dedicated the church at Glamis and granted it to Arbroath Abbey. The earlier church, being " old and in very bad condition ", was demolished in 1790 and two years later the present church was opened. Built in a mixture of Gothic and Romanesque, the church is rectangular in plan, with a large square tower and spire centrally placed attached to the west gable. Fresh snow is expected to hit Scotland with the weather forecast anticipating as much as 15cm to fall over a 24-hour period. Stirling, the Highlands, Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and Glasgow are among the place to potentially see the worst of the conditions. The surname Fergus was first found in Galloway, Gaelic: Gall-ghaidhealaibh, an area of southwestern Scotland, now part of the Council Area of Dumfries and Galloway, that formerly consisted of the counties of Wigtown in West Galloway and Kirkcudbright in East Galloway. where St. Fergus was an Irish bishop, who went to Scotland as a missionary. He settled near Strageath and founded three churches in Strogeth and two in Caithness. It is possible that he was the Fergustus Pictus who went to Rome in 721 AD. According to Irish lore, a family of this name descend from Fergus, Prince of Galloway, died 1161, who is said to have married a daughter of King Henry I of England. Constantine Mac Fergus was King of the Picts, he acquired the monarchy by the defeat of Conall Mac Taidg who was assassinated in 807 by another Conall, son of Aidan, a Dalriad king in Kintyre. Fergus has appeared in various documents spelled Fergus, Fergie, Forgie, Forgus, Ferris, Farris and many more. Owen Fergus, aged 41, arrived in South Australia in 1858 aboard the ship Utopia; Christian Fergus, settled in Quebec, Canada, in 1820; James Fergus arrived in North Carolina, America, in 1740; David Fergus settled in New York, NY, America, in 1822 By the meteorological calendar, the first day of Winter is always 1st December in Scotland; ending on 28th of February.
