It is considered an iconic structure and a symbol of Scotland, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was designed by the English engineers Sir John Fowler and Sir Benjamin Baker. Although the station in North Queensferry was not in service by the time of the opening of the Forth Bridge in March 1890, it was in use soon after. The station replaced the station at North Queensferry Pier, which had been opened in 1874 to take passengers to and from the ferry across the Forth.
