Tour Scotland 4K short travel video clip, with Scottish music, of Invercauld Castle on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit to Royal Deeside. The Farquharson family settled in the area in the 14th century, and constructed a tower house in the 16th century. A vaulted basement within the present building dates from this time, although the tower house was remodelled in the late 17th century. Further alterations were made through the 18th and 19th centuries, and in 1875 the castle was extensively remodelled by John Thomas Wimperis in the Scots Baronial style. The surname Farquharson was first found in Aberdeenshire, Gaelic: Siorrachd Obar Dheathain, a historic county, and present day Council Area of Aberdeen, located in the Grampian region of north eastern Scotland, where the family has a long and distinguished history dating back to the early Middle Ages. They claim descent from Farquhar Mackintosh who arrived in Braemar in 1382. The Clan Farquharson was one of the principal members of the Clan Chattan, the Clan of the Cat, a powerful Clan confederation. Accordingly, they rank as a sept of the Clan Chattan. Their alliance with the MacKintoshes was particularly strong and this proved quite advantageous, as the MacKintoshes were the captains of the Clan. The name Farquharson is derived from the Gaelic MacFhearchair, which means son of Farquhar. Farquhar is derived from the Gaelic word Fearchar, which means very dear one. So, the name means son of the very dear one. Farquharson has been written as Farquharson, Farqharson, Farquharsen, MacFhearchair, Gaelic, Caraher and many more. Elizabeth Farquharson, a Scottish convict from Glasgow, was transported aboard the ship Arab on December 14, 1835, settling in Van Diemen's Land, Australia; James Farquharson, a Scottish settler travelled from Glasgow aboard the ship Jura arriving in Dunedin, Otago, South Island, New Zealand on 23rd September 1858; John Farquharson, a Scottish settler travelled from Glasgow aboard the ship Storm Cloud arriving in Otago, South Island, New Zealand on 30th July 1861; Alexander Farquharson is on record in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1795; John Farquharson arrived in Canada in 1817; Harry Farquharson arrived in Virginia, America, in 1716; Robert Farquharson arrived in Virginia, America, in 1716; Alexander Farquharson arrived in New Jersey, America, in 1717; Alexander Farquharson, along with John, Donald, Duncan, Peter and William, were among Scots banished to the American Plantations in Barbados in 1745.
