Dunskey Castle On Visit To The Coast Dumfries And Galloway Scotland

Tour Scotland travel video clip, with Scottish music, of Dunskey Castle on visit to the coast of Dumfries and Galloway. There appears to have been a castle of Dunskey from very early times, though the present building probably dates to the early 16th century, when the preceding castle was burnt. The ditch and parts of the enclosure may have formed part of an earlier castle of the Adair family; a castle has been on record since the 14th century, but some time before 1503 it was invested and burnt by the fearsome McCullochs of Myrton and Cardoness. The nucleus of the tower was built early in the 16th century by William Adair of Kinhilt probable builder also of Stranraer Castle. It was later added to and remodelled, the most likely patron for this work being Viscount Montgomery, laird of Dunskey from 1608 until his death in 1636. After his acquisition of the estate in 1648 the Reverend James Blair moved to Killantringan, and already by 1684 this castle was in ruins. The surname Adair was first found in Galloway, Gaelic: Gall-ghaidhealaibh, an area of southwestern Scotland, now part of the Council Area of Dumfries and Galloway, that formerly consisted of the counties of Wigtown in West Galloway and Kirkcudbright in East Galloway. Tradition has it that the foundation of the family of Adair of Dunskey and Kinhilt originated from a fugitive son of Fitzgerald, Earl Desmond of Adair in Ireland. Desmond was descended from Otto Geraldino, a Norman noble who accompanied William, Duke of Normandy into England in 1066. He also accompanied Strongbow into Ireland in 1172, and became Earl of Desmond. He settled in Kirkcudbright and Wigtown. The name Adair has also been spelled Adair, Odeir, Edzear, Edgar, Adare and others.. Alexander Adair, aged 40, was a labourer, who arrived in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada aboard the ship Cupid in 1834; Thomas Adair arrived in Pennsylvania, America, in 1730; William Adair landed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, America, in 1745; Edward Adair landed in Charleston, South Carolina, America, in 1807; Henderson Adair arrived in Arkansas, America, in 1902.
