James Arthur, born 1819, died 1885, was a clothing manufacturer and one of Britain’s largest wholesale clothing dealers. Arthur was born in Paisley, and became a draper there. In 1849 he went into partnership with Hugh Fraser, opening a drapery store in Buchanan Street. In 1856 they relocated their wholesale clothing business to Miller Street, trading as Arthur & Co, and in 1865 the Arthur & Fraser partnership was dissolved, leaving Fraser with the retail business. Arthur remained senior partner in Arthur & Co, which began manufacturing ready-made clothing in the 1880s. The business prospered and by the time of his death had three clothing factories and employed over 700 travelling salesmen. In 1847 Arthur married Jane Glen, and he supported her campaign to become Scotland’s first female member of a school board. After Arthur’s death she established the Arthur Fellowship to promote the medical education of women.

The surname Arthur was first found in the county of Berwickshire an ancient county of Scotland, presently part of the Scottish Borders. The Arthur family traced their descent from King Aedan Mac Gabrain, King of Dalriada, whose mother was a British Princess, and named his eldest son Arthur, and he was believed to be the first Gael to bear the name. The family name was recorded in the late 6th and early 7th century.

James Arthur, a plasterer, arrived in New South Wales, Australia sometime between 1825 and 1832; Margaret Arthur, a Scottish convict from Glasgow, who was transported aboard the Amphitrite on August 21, 1833, settling in New South Wales, Australia; Thomas Arthur, a Scottish settler travelled from Glasgow aboard the ship Robert Henderson arriving in Bluff, Southland, South Island, New Zealand on 18th November 1863; Joseph Arthur settled in Virginia, America, in 1623; Hugh Arthur, arrived in Virginia in 1649; Elizabeth Arthur, landed in Virginia in 1651
