The River Tay, Scottish Gaelic: Tatha, is the longest river in Scotland and the seventh longest in the United Kingdom. The Tay originates in western Scotland on the slopes of Ben Lui, Scottish Gaelic: Beinn Laoigh, then flows easterly across the Highlands, through Loch Dochart, Loch Iubhair and Loch Tay, then continues east through Strathtay, in the centre of Scotland, then southeasterly through Perth, where it becomes tidal, to its mouth at the Firth of Tay, south of Dundee, Tayside. It is the largest river in Britain by measured discharge. Its catchment is approximately 2,000 square miles , the River Tweed is 1,500 square miles, and the River Spey is 1,097 square miles.
The surname Tay was first found in Essex where they held a family seat from early times as Lords of the manor of Tey in England. The name has been spelled Tey, Tay, Teyas, They, Toye, Teye and others. William Tay, born 1834, aged 22, a farm servant departed from Plymouth, England, on 31st August 1856 aboard the ship Severn arriving in Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia on 9th December 1856; William Tay, born 1845, aged 29, a farm labourer departed on 28th July 1874 aboard the ship Helen Denny going to Hawkes Bay, New Zealand arriving in port on 22nd October 1874; Henry Tay, landed in Ipswich, Massachusetts, America, in 1655 ; Elias Tay, arrived in Pennsylvania, America, in 1693; George Tay and his wife settled in Philadelphia, America, in 1764.
