Old Photographs Of Kilmuir Trotternish Peninsula Isle Of Skye Scotland
Tour Scotland wee travel video of old Scottish photographs of Kilmuir, Scottish Gaelic: Cille Mhoire, a village on the west coast of the Trotternish peninsula in the north of the island of Skye, Inner Hebrides. Flora MacDonald, who assisted Bonnie Prince Charlie to escape from Scotland after his defeat at Culloden, is buried in the cemetery here. The Kilmuir name signifies the Church of Mary, and is derived from the Gaelic words Cill, a chapel, or burial ground, and Muire, Mary. Kilmuir was once famous for its pipers; the leading performers and teachers of this ancient and martial music were the MacArthurs. When the Duke and Duchess of York, later to become George V and Queen Mary, visited Skye in 1933 they were given a tour of the largest house at Kilmuir and were impressed with the tidy appearance of the cottage and the skill of the crofters in being able to build such sturdy dwellings.
