Old Photographs Of Kilchrenan Argyll And Bute Scotland

Tour Scotland wee travel video of old Scottish photographs of Kilchrenan, Scottish Gaelic: Cill Chrèanain, is a small village in Argyll and Bute. Kilchrenan is located at the foot of the Munro mountain, Ben Cruachan, near to the end of the B845 road, about a mile inland from Loch Awe. Kilchrenan church was built in 1770 on the site of an earlier church dating back to the 12th century. Some stones from that church have been incorporated into the present building. Interior remodelled 1904 when the original east west orientation was re-established. There are interesting tombstones in the graveyard including that of Cailean Mor, Sir Colin Campbell, in 1294. Cailean Mór Caimbeul is one of the earliest attested members of Clan Campbell and an important ancestor figure of the later medieval Earls of Argyll. Cailean was the son of Gilleasbaig, a knight and lord of the estates of Menstrie and Sauchie in Clackmannanshire. Cailean was the cousin of the future king, Robert I of Scotland, which explains why the Campbells were so attached to the Bruce cause during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Cailean himself took part in the Great Cause, and was one of the Bruce representative advocates to King Edward I of England in 1291.
