Ye Banks And Braes O'Bonnie Doon Robert Burns Song Scotland

Tour Scotland travel video of the Ye Banks And Braes O' Bonnie Doon song by Robert Burns set to a slide show of some old photographs of Alloway. This song dates back to 1791. The flowering rose with its hidden thorn is a metaphor for the pain of love betrayed. The song was inspired by the story of Margaret, known as Peggy, Kennedy, born 1766, died 1795, who was seduced then abandoned by Andrew McDouall, son of a wealthy family and sometime Member of Parliament for Wigtonshire. Kennedy sued for a declarator of marriage, but died prior to adjudication of the case. Although the Consistorial court found the marriage claim valid, the Court of Session decided the marriage claim failed, but found McDouall to be the father of Kennedy's daughter and ordered that he pay £3,000 to Kennedy's estate and provide for the child.

Robert Burns was born, on the 25 January 1759, two miles south of Ayr, Ayrshire, in Alloway, the eldest of the seven children of William Burnes, a self educated tenant farmer from Dunnottar in the Mearns, and Agnes Broun, the daughter of a Kirkoswald tenant farmer. The only occasion that Robert Burns visited Perth, Perthshire, was towards the end of his 22 day tour of the Highlands during August and September, 1787.
