Old Photograph Ritchie Newsagent Shop Gretna Green Scotland

Old photograph of the Ritchie Newsagent Shop in Gretna Green, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Located just over the border between Scotland and England, the Old Toll Bar has been an iconic location for many years. Having welcomed many a runaway couple eager to marry as soon as they reached Scottish soil. It is in Dumfries and Galloway, near the mouth of the River Esk and was historically the first village in Scotland, following the old coaching route from London to Edinburgh. Gretna Green is one of the world's most popular wedding destinations. Since 1929 both parties in Scotland have had to be at least 16 years old, but they still may marry without parental consent.

The surname Ritchie was first found in Perthshire, Gaelic: Siorrachd Pheairt, former county in the present day Council Area of Perth and Kinross, located in central Scotland, where they held a family seat from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Scotland to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.
