Old Photograph Railway Viaduct Eye Water Scotland

Old photograph of the railway viaduct over the Eye Water near Eyemouth, Scottish Borders, Scotland. The viaduct was originally opened on 13 April 1891 to carry the privately promoted Eyemouth Railway across the Eye Water into Eyemouth. Severe flooding in August 1948 caused grave damage to the structure, including severe foundation scouring and the collapse of the central pier. New concrete foundations were laid and new cutwaters added as part of the reconstruction before the line was re-opened on 29 June 1949. The line closed to traffic on 5 February 1962. The viaduct formerly carried the Eyemouth branch of the former North British Railway across the Eye Water, which here forms the boundary between the parishes of Ayton and Eyemouth, both in Berwickshire. The viaduct has been dismantled and only the piers, the earth embankment from the North and the course of the line to the South East survive.
