Old Photograph Kilkerran House Scotland

Old photograph of Kilkerran House, an 18th century country house, near Maybole in South Ayrshire, Scotland. It has been home to the Fergusson family since Fergus Fergusson obtained a charter from Robert the Bruce in the early 1300s, confirming that the lands at Kilkerran were his. The core of the house dates back to about 1700, and has been expanded in 1818 by James Gillespie Graham, including William Adam fireplaces, a billiards room by David Bryce in 1855, and stable offices by Brown and Wardrop in 1873. In 1956, the house was redecorated under the supervision of the architect Schomberg Scott. The Ayrshire Fergusons, who descended from Fergus, the independent 12th century Lord of Galloway, were established in the Southwest of Scotland even before they received their charter from Bruce, the King of Scotland, in the 13th century. Furthermore, numerous families of the name Ferguson were established throughout Scotland at an early date. In Argyll, where the Ferguson Clan is particularly numerous, the Fergusons held lands in Strachur until the beginning of the 19th century. The Fergussons of Perthshire were recognized as the principal Highland branch of the Clan and the chieftainship belonged to the Dunfallandy family, the head of which was designated MacFhearghui.
