Old Photograph Carding And Spinning Wool Thurso Scotland
Old photograph of Crofters carding and spinning wool inside a cottage in Thurso, Caithness, Scotland. James Williamson Galloway Macdonald was born in May 1897 in Thurso. He was a member of Painters Eleven whose goal was to promote abstract art in Canada. Before going to Canada, Macdonald attended the Edinburgh College of Art and worked as a designer for a Scottish textile company. After being recruited by Charles Hepburn Scott, he moved to Canada in 1926 to become a professor at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts. He was an influential professor at several art colleges in Canada and helped spur the modern art movement in the country. He was made a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He died in Toronto in December 1960. Blog post of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
