Tour Scotland Autumn Travel Video Passenger Trains Crossing Railway Bridge Perth Perthshire Scotland
Tour Scotland Autumn travel video of Abellio ScotRail passenger trains, to and from Dundee, crossing the railway bridge over the River Tay on visit to Perth, Perthshire, Scotland. The first bridge here was built on a curve of 15 chain radius and was of predominantly timber construction. Problems with the foundations of the structure necessitated its replacement, the new bridge being designed by the engineers of the Caledonian Railway and opened in 1863. The new bridge, which remains in use, was built on a slightly easier curve, of 17 chains, and was, like its predecessor, designed to carry a single track. It comprises six iron girder spans to the East of Moncrieffe Island, ten stone arches on the island itself, and seven further girder spans to the West. Perth railway station was opened, as Perth General, by the Scottish Central Railway in 1848. Originally the terminus of the SCR main line from Greenhill Junction near Glasgow, it soon became a junction of some importance with the arrival of the Dundee and Perth Railway from Dundee, following the completion of a bridge across the River Tay.
