Old Photograph Market Cross Main Street Aberlady Scotland

Old photograph of the Market Cross on Main Street in Aberlady, East Lothian, Scotland. Aberlady Market Cross, the top of which is missing, stands on the North side of the village street. It consists of a square sectioned shaft 6 feet in length, 10 inches in diameter, inserted in a plinth 2 feet 3 inches square and 1 foot 11 inches high resting on a graduated base of four tiers 3 feet 8 inches in height with a maximum diameter of 9 feet 1 inch. In the Middle Ages, Aberlady was an important harbour for fishing, sealing, and whaling. Aberlady also had strong links with the monasteries on the island of Iona and the tidal island of Lindisfarne from the 7th century, and its role was to facilitate the pilgrim traffic between the two sites. Aberlady Parish Church dates back to the 15th century. It was rebuilt in 1887. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
