Old Photograph High School Elmbank Street Glasgow Scotland

Old photograph of the High School on Elmbank Street in Glasgow, Scotland. In 1878, The High School of Glasgow moved from John Street to its new home at Elmbank Street. Purchased from the Glasgow Academy, the Elmbank Street building had been designed by Charles Wilson and completed in 1847. His original Italian palazzo design for Elmbank Street had included four statues of famous men of learning to grace the front of the building. For financial reasons, these statues were never added while the building was owned by the Glasgow Academy. On 13th January 1879, the eight foot high statues of Homer, Cicero, Galileo and James Watt were added to the pillars at the entrance of the building. The statues were crafted by John Mossman, whose work adorns many of the buildings in Glasgow from this time period.
