Evidence from archaeological excavations proves humans survived on this harsh, treeless island since at least the Bronze Age. Islanders relied heavily on scaling precipitous cliffs to harvest seabirds such as puffins, gannets, and fulmars for food, feathers, and oil. Ravaged by disease, crop failures, isolation, and a dwindling population, the remaining 36 permanent residents voted to leave. On 29 August 1930, they evacuated to the Scottish mainland. St Kilda is known for its dramatic sea cliffs, particularly on the island of Hirta, which boasts the highest sea cliffs in the UK The islands of St Kilda have a rich human history, with a permanent civilian population until 1930. St Kilda is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for both its natural and cultural significance. St Kilda also has the highest sea stacks in the UK, including Stac an Armin and Stac Lee.
