Earlstoun Loch is formed by a widening of the Water of Ken a mile to the north west of St John's Town of Dalry. The Earlstoun Linn falls into the loch at its head and on its eastern shore stand Earlstoun House and Earlstoun Castle which was built by the Sinclair family in the middle of the 16th Century. In 1615 the castle passed to Alexander Gordon of Airds.
