Old Photograph Charles Reis Shop Argyle Street Glasgow Scotland

Old photograph of the Charles Reis jewelry shop on Argyle Street in Glasgow, Scotland. Charles Lionel Reis was born on 7 July 1849, at 5 Chatsworth Street, Liverpool, England, the eldest son of Jonas and Marian Reis. He married his first cousin Elizabeth Woodburn on 3 January 1872 at the Old Hebrew Congregation church in Liverpool. Elizabeth was born in 1853 in Liverpool, and she died on 21 April 1915 while at 8 Lynedoch Place, Glasgow. She was the daughter of Hannah and Samuel Woodburn. Charles Reis occupied the premises at the corner of Argyle Street and Jamaica Street, Glasgow, for a period of 45 years. Originally known as Westergait, Argyle Street led west from Trongate to the city's West Port, the western gate out of the city's walls. It was renamed in honour of the Duke of Argyll, some time after the removal of the West Port in 1751, as a result of the expansion of the city westward. Argyle Street is now a major thoroughfare in the city centre of Glasgow. With Buchanan Street and Sauchiehall Street, Argyle Street is one of the main shopping streets in the city centre. It begins in the south eastern corner of the city centre, at the Trongate, where it is pedestrianized as far as Queen Street.
