The name is derived from a combination of Old English words: " Green " from grēne: Referring to the color or a grassy area. " Lee " from leah: Meaning a clearing, meadow, or woodland.

Charlie Chaplin, used to holiday every year in Nairn and stayed at the Newton Hotel.
