Tour Scotland video of old photographs of Alness, Easter Ross, Scotland. In September 1715 the Skirmish of Alness took place between Jacobite clans such as the MacKenzies, MacDonalds under the Earl of Seaforth, and pro government Munros, Rosses, MacKays under the Earl of Sutherland. The Jacobites drove their opponents over Struie to Bonar. During World War II, Alness was home to RAF Alness, a large training and operational base for Catalina amphibians and Sunderland seaplanes, which extended from Invergordon to Alness point. Alness Golf Club, which was established in 1904. James Fraser was born in 1700 at the manse of Alness in Ross-shire, where his father, the Reveend John Fraser, died 1711, was minister from 1696. The father was seized with Alexander Shields in 1684, and was imprisoned in Dunnottar Castle 18 May 1685. He with his wife was among the hundred persons who were made a present of to George Scot of Pitlochie and shipped to New Jersey. There Fraser was set at liberty; went to New England, and preached as a licentiate at Waterbury, Connecticut. He returned to Scotland at the Glorious Revolution, was ordained, and settled first at Glencorse, and later at Alness. He died in 1769.
