Tour Scotland Video Christmas Carols Being Sung In Scottish Churches
Tour Scotland video of Christmas Carols being sung by choirs on visit to various churches in Scotland. The word “ carol ” comes from the Old French carole, meaning a ring dance accompanied by song, and first appears in English in the early 14th century. Early carols all had verses of equal length punctuated by a refrain so the dancers circled during the verse then stopped to dance during the chorus. The singing of Christmas carols, popular tunes with religious lyrics, was encouraged by the medieval church and disseminated widely by wandering Franciscan friars. The tradition of singing carols in church is really an invention of the 19th century.
