Old photograph of Sergeant Major Robert Middlemiss in Scotland. Sergeant Major Robert Middlemiss of the 2nd Kings Own Scottish Borderers. In 1889 he enlisted in Edinburgh serving until discharged upon being blinded by shrapnel during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915. Following his “re-education” at a facility for the blind at St. Dunstan’s he was recruited by the Permanent Blind Relief War Fund to lead a fundraising and lecture tour of America and Canada in 1916 and 1917, accompanied by his wife Beatrice.
