Old photograph of Portmore House by Eddleston located four miles North of Peebles in the Borders of Scotland. The lands that came to form the basis of the Portmore estate were bought from the Black Barony in 1732 by the 2nd Earl of Portmore. These consisted of Waterloch, including fishing rights, Courhope, Kingside, Dean Easter with Cloich and Shiplaw, Over Falla, and half of Nether Falla. The price recorded was £7,101. He also purchased half of Northshiels which was part of Hopetoun and the White Barony. The original Portmore house was not built until around 1850 It was destroyed in 1883 in a fire but was rebuilt the following year and underwent further restoration work in 1982 and again following another fire in 1986.
