Old photograph of houses in Lower Skelmorlie, Ayrshire, Scotland. In the early part of the 20th century the Royal Navy used a measured nautical mile in the Firth of Clyde off Skelmorlie, known as the Skelmorlie Mile as the range for speed trials of new warships.
