Old photograph of Mangerton Cross near Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders, Scotland. This monument commemorates the murder of Alexander Armstrong, the 2nd laird of Mangerton, at Hermitage Castle by a member of the infamous de Soulis family. The Cross is one of the Armstrong Clan’s most ancient and valued relics. The Armstrong name was common over the whole of Northumbria and the Scottish Borders. The Armstrongs became a powerful and warlike clan in Liddesdale and the Debatable Lands.
