Old photograph of houses on Moorpark Road in Stevenston in North Ayrshire, Scotland. The surname Stevenston was first found in Northumberland, England, where they were established since the early Middle Ages at Knaresdale Hall, and at Newcastle on Tyne. By 1150, they had moved north to Scotland in the parish of Newlands in Peebles, where Stevene Stevenson swore an oath of allegiance to King Edward I of England during the latter's brief conquest of Scotland in 1296. Noted natives and past residents of Stevenston included; Gordon Smith, footballer; Des Browne, former Secretary of State for Defence and Secretary of State for Scotland; Steve Clarke, former Chelsea and Scotland Footballer, Grado, professional wrestler and actor on River City; James Harnett, football coach of KSC Madrid, Son of James Harnett Senorr and cousin to Mick Harnett. Blog post of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day.
