Old Photograph Colvend Scotland

Old photograph of a vintage car outside a cottage in Colvend near Dalbeattie in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. The name Colvend is believed to derive from the 15th century proprietor, John de Culwen. In the 18th century, the secluded bays and inlets along the Colvend coast were used for smuggling various goods, including salt, whisky, tea, and gin, which were hidden in underground cellars and transported to other parts of Scotland. This illicit trade flourished until the mid 19th century.
