Old photograph of Edward VIII Prince Of Wales driving on the 1st Tee on the Old Golf Course in St Andrews, Fife, Scotland. Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David; born 23 June 1894, died 28 May 1972, was King of the United Kingdom and the Dominions of the British Empire, and Emperor of India, from 20 January 1936 until his abdication on 11 December 1936. Edward was the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary. He was created Prince of Wales on his sixteenth birthday, nine weeks after his father succeeded his own father, Edward VII, as king. As a young man, he served in the British Armed Forces during the First World War and undertook several overseas tours on behalf of his father. At the Club’s General Meeting on 2 May 1922, it was announced that His Royal Highness Edward, Prince of Wales, had accepted the invitation to become Captain of the The Royal and Ancient Golf Club.
