Old photograph of staff outside the Post Office in Stromness, Orkney Islands, Scotland. Before formal postal infrastructure, mail arrived in Stromness via " post boats," which were small open vessels, approximatel. 20 feet long, traveling from Caithness to Longhope. Delivery was irregular and depended heavily on weather and the condition of rough island roads.
