Old Photograph Berneray Scotland

Old photograph of Blackhouse cottages in Berneray located between Isle of Harris and North Uist, in the Sound of Harris in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland. Built with two parallel dry stone walls, filled with earth or peat for insulation. The thatched roofs were often secured with rope netting and large stones to prevent wind damage. The design allowed families to live in close proximity to their livestock for warmth and safety.
