Old Photograph Drumcoltran Tower Scotland

Old photograph of Drumcoltran Tower, a late 16th Century tower house situated near Kirkgunzeon, Kirkcudbrightshire, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Drumcoltran Tower was home to a minor branch of the Maxwells of Caerlaverock. The lands of Kirkgunzeon were granted by Uchtred of Galloway to the Abbey of Holm Cultram in Cumbria in about 1170, but was reclaimed by Robert the Bruce for Scotland during the Wars of Independence. They were retained by the Crown until David II granted them to Sir John Herries in 1367. By 1547, the lands of Drumcoltran were held separately from Lord Herries by Edward Maxwell of Hills, and in 1550 the superiority passed with marriage to Sir John Maxwell, Master of Maxwell. The tower was built by Edward Maxwell, and remained with his descendants until 1679, when his daughters split the estate between them.
