Old photograph of Crofters cottages near Lochboisdale, South Uist, Scotland. In 1838, the Clan Ranald chief sold South Uist to John Gordon of Cluny, sparking a brutal period of evictions. By 1851, half the tenantry was forcibly cleared to Canada to make way for more profitable sheep farming.
