Old photograph of loom weaving on the Orkney Islands, Scotland. From the mid 1700s to 1830, a thriving linen weaving industry existed, encouraged by the British Linen Board. The industry declined due to industrial mechanization in the south, which made smaller, manual production uncompetitive.
