Old photograph of a cottage in Glenesk, Angus, Scotland. Starting in the 1750s, the Highland Clearances profoundly impacted Glenesk. Crofters, tenant farmers, were forced off their land to make way for large scale sheep farming and to prevent further Jacobite risings. Many were forced to relocate to the coast, cities, or emigrate to North America, Canada, or Australia.
