Old photograph of Islanders knitting in a cottage on the Shetland Islands, Scotland. Knitting probably spread to the islands in the 16th century via Hanseatic traders, Dutch fishermen, and Scandinavian sailors. The abundant native Shetland sheep provided an invaluable, naturally insulated resource for islanders.
