Old photograph of Brachelston Square, Greenock, Scotland, In the 17th century Greenock was a small fishing village consisting of one row of thatched cottages. Port facilities were greatly improved during the 18th and 19th centuries, and shipbuilding, marine engineering, sugar refining, and textile manufacture developed and expanded. Large numbers of warships and passenger liners were built in Greenock’s extensive shipyards, which stretched to neighbouring Port Glasgow
