Old Photograph Dunbar Scotland
Old photograph of houses, horse and cart and people in Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland. A town on the south east coast of Scotland, approximately thirty miles east of Edinburgh. John Muir, born April 21, 1838, died December 24, 1914, was born in Dunbar. He was a Scottish American naturalist, author, environmental philosopher and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. His parents were Daniel Muir and Ann Gilrye. He was the third of eight children: Margaret, Sarah, David, Daniel, Ann and Mary, and the American born Joanna. In 1849, Muir's family immigrated to the United States, starting a farm near Portage, Wisconsin, called Fountain Lake Farm. When he was 22 years old, John Muir enrolled at the University of Wisconsin Madison, paying his own way for several years. Finally settling in San Francisco, Muir immediately left for a week long visit to Yosemite, a place he had only read about. Seeing it for the first time, Muir notes that " He was overwhelmed by the landscape."
