Old Travel Blog Photograph Market Cross Thornhill Scotland

Old travel Blog photograph of the Market Cross in Thornhill located north of Dumfries, Scotland. A tall column on a massive base standing on two steps, and surmounted by a bronze flying horse, was erected at Thornhill, about 1714, by the Duke of Queensberry. This Scottish town is designed in a grid pattern with the main street of Drumlanrig Street, East and West Morton Streets, New Street, Townhead Street and Gill Road. The town is near Drumlanrig Castle, a 17th century turreted mansion once the ancient Clan Douglas stronghold, now home to the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry.
