Scotsman Walking Wearing Kilt By Loch Maree On Winter History Visit To Highlands Of Scotland

Scottish Gaelic: Loch Ma-ruibhe, it is the fourth largest freshwater loch in Scotland. Between 671 and 722, Celtic Church missionary St Máel Ruba arrived at Loch Maree, and founded a chapel and Christian pilgrimage shrine. The loch became a popular spot for trout fishing after Queen Victoria visited the Loch Maree Hotel at Talladale in 1877. Thomas Pennant, writing in 1772, recorded that the loch was considered a holy well whose waters were thought to have curative effects, with being submerged in the water thought to be a cure for lunacy. Scotsman Walking Wearing Kilt By Loch Ewe On Winter History Visit To Highlands Of Scotland

Scottish Gaelic: Loch Iùbh, it is a sea loch. Due to the rugged and inaccessible mountain terrain in which it is located, Loch Ewe has always been an assembly point for maritime trade. Loch Ewe was a temporary base of the Home Fleet during the Second World War. It was also used as an assembly point for the Arctic Convoys during the war. Ships from the British, American and other ports gathered here before sailing to Murmansk from September 1942 following the disaster of Convoy PQ 17 in order to confuse German intelligence. At the German surrender in April 1945 Loch Ewe became the British marshalling point for many of the German U-boats that had surrendered while at sea.
